The vibrant melody of a song can make you feel like you're on top of the world with nothing to lose. As the instruments and the lead vocalist's voice melt into each other like flavor in a hot plate of food you might think creating such a sound was simple. Making music can be a lot of fun but there are a few things one should know before jumping head on into it.
Anyone who wants to be successful in music must be unique. Having a style that stands out from the rest of the others is a powerful way of getting established. Being unique means you try to be different from what is already out there and at the same time offering a better quality of music. So if your role model plays a popular black electric guitar you must get a white or pink one and proceed to strum it differently.
An image is one thing that is crucial but is given the least amount of attention. An image is a look or appearance that can be used to associate the music you make and yourself. Rock stars have crazy looking hair and makeup as an image that people use to associate their music with. You can establish a reputation for wearing shorts or the cloaks for priests, so log it is unique to you and different.
Music has been around longer than language itself. Therefore this should tell you that it is crucial to have an evolving sound that shows marks of innovation and improvement from previous standards. And it might not be about the development of sound but just about how you look around you and find ways of improving on what other people did before. An innovative approach is key to getting established and recognized.
So if your music goes out there and people love it you will be faced with one minor problem, maintaining your quality or image. Consistency is what a number of musicians struggle to attain and this can be their downfall if they are careless. If you have established a reputation for wearing a full face helmet on stage then people will want to see that perhaps forever.
Controversy is said to sell and that is very true. When your supporters hear that you said or did something they will be eager to want to know what you think about it. People might think this is a joke but it's true. But this doesn't mean you should go out there looking for trouble. What it simply means is that you will have to publicise your life to a certain extent and your fans might have something to talk about.
One last thing is patience. Every musician should know that success and recognition can come after a long waiting period. Therefore if you know this and take one step at a time you won't actually be tempted to give up when you've almost made it. On the other hand impatience will be like a men's sport watch with an alarm as a deadline, too much pressure.
